 Greyfriar's Bobby

No mention of the heavenly breed is complete without Greyfriar's Bobby. Folklore immortalized Bobby for being a devoted and loving skye terrier who grieved at his master's grave till his own death.
Bobby belonged to a policeman named John Gray (sometimes called Jock) of local Edinburgh. Jock died and was buried in Grayfriar's graveyard. Bobby followed his dead master's coffin and stayed at the grave day or night, rain or shine!! Though he was not allowed to stay within the graveyard the caretaker of the place, moved by Bobby's devotion decided to let him be with his beloved master. Soon Bobby became a local celebrity as news of his dedication spread.

Despite his fame poor Bobby could not find anyone to help pay for his dog license. Sir William Chambers paid for it each year and Bobby was removed from the stray list and allowed to live his days out at Jock's grave. Fourteen years went by but Bobby never left Jock for a day. Upon his death on January 14th, 1872 a decision to bury him in the same graveyard from which he was initially barred was made,
A year later a statue dedicated to his memory was unveiled.
Bobby's devotion and story became immortalized and to this day thousands pay tribute to the little skye terrier who moved hearts and made devotion and love the only purpose of his life.
His ability to love unconditionaly and unquestioningly inspired everyone who knew him and it still stands as a guiding light for many.

Elenor Atkinson's famous book Greyfriar's Bobby is still one of the most beautiful children's stories to date, a tale that binds generations.
Disney made a movie of  Greyfriar's Bobby in the early 60s.

June 2nd 2009,

At the William Heath Davis House Museum, in downtown San Diego (CA), a statue and tribute to Greyfriar's Bobby greets the visitors. About 4.20 minutes into this video you can see the statue. My credit to the maker of this adorable video, and a huge thank you for thinking of precious Bobby.
